The 2024 BILA book prize was announced on 6 November 2024 in the Old Library at Lloyd’s following the memorial lecture on interpreting insurance contracts, which was delivered by Sir Stephen Males in memory of Professor Malcolm Clarke.
The prize-winning book is “The Global Insurance Market and Change”. Alison Green and Peter MacDonald Eggers KC, trustees of the BILA Charitable Trust, congratulated Anthony A. Tarr, Julie-Anne Tarr and Maurice Thompson, editors of the book. The editors accepted the award on their own behalf and on behalf of their fellow editor, Dino Wilkinson, and other contributors. When announcing the winner Alison stated that this book was “forward looking”. It tackled various technological developments which provided advantages to society and to insurers, but also presented challenges so far as insurance coverage and insurance law were concerned. Contributors helpfully viewed these challenges from the perspective of some different jurisdictions. The book also considered the impact of other global developments, such as Climate Change and pandemics, and how far insurance and insurance law might assist in seeking to deal with their effects.
