The British Insurance Law Association Charitable Trust has announced the appointment of Professor James Davey to succeed Professor Robert Merkin as one of its four charitable trustees.

Professor Merkin, who is stepping down, ends just short of 20 years’ invaluable service as a trustee.  Himself a three times-recognised author or co-author of winning entries for the BILA Book Prize, Rob taught or supervised a whole generation of later authors, whose works were in contention for the award, indeed many winners. Rob’s prolific contribution to the field proved the only handicap to his being an active Book Prize judge on many occasions owing to his involvement in so many important works created and published.

As the retiring President of BILA and Professor of Law at the University of Bristol Law School, Professor Davey is already a familiar figure to all in BILA circles, having delivered in particular a number of deservedly well-received BILA Annual Update Lectures among other presentations over recent times.

The continuing trustees, Alison Green (Chair), Tim Hardy (Vice Chair) and Peter Macdonald Eggers KC are indeed very fortunate to have James added to their number to continue the work of the Trust, which celebrated its 40th Anniversary last year.  The Trust remains active in supporting academic interest and research in the field of insurance law and practice.
